North and central Japan temples: Zenkoji, Chusonji, Yamadera and Zuiganji
Fees, hours, closed days and 2026-27 changes for Zenkoji, Chusonji, Yamadera and Zuiganji, with winter closing times from 15:00 to 16:30.
Winter closing times decide how a North and central Japan temple day runs. Yamadera closes at 15:00 from December to March (its page also says 16:00), Zuiganji at 15:30 in December and January, Zenkoji’s inner hall at 16:00 and Chusonji at 16:30. Fees run from $3 (¥500) at Yamadera to $6 (¥1,000) at Chusonji and Zuiganji, and Zenkoji sells by building.
Each section gives fee, hours, closed days, booking and 2026-27 changes. A gap is marked not found once, and no official page states a best season. Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
Atsuta Jingu in Nagoya is in the Nara, Osaka, Koyasan, Ise and Nagoya guide. For trip planning, see Nagano for Zenkoji and Tohoku for the other three. For manners, see Shrine and temple etiquette. The wider list is in the temples and shrines guide, and the Culture hub holds the topic.
How do you choose between them?
Pick by what you want to see, then check the closing time.

- Morning service and a head blessing: Zenkoji, at sunrise.
- Cliffside halls and a stair climb: Yamadera, with 1,015 stone steps.

- Latest winter closing: Chusonji, at 16:30 from 4 November to February.
Zenkoji
Zenkoji, in Nagano city, is an ancient temple whose main image is hidden from view. Its Gokaicho, a rare viewing of a replica of that image, is reported for 4 April to 19 June 2027, per regional notes that were not rechecked; sources differ on the interval between viewings.
Admission is by building. Adults pay:
- Inner hall and Okaidan meguri, the underground passage: $5 (¥800). High school and junior high students pay $2 (¥300), elementary pupils $1 (¥100), and preschool children are free.
- Sanmon gate: $5 (¥800).
- Kyozo hall: $3 (¥500).
- Combined ticket (inner hall, Okaidan, Sanmon, Kyozo and museum): $10 (¥1,500). High school and junior high students pay $4 (¥600) and elementary pupils $1 (¥200).
The inner hall and Okaidan meguri open one hour before the morning service. They close at 16:30 from April to October, 16:15 in March and November, and 16:00 from December to February. The Sanmon, Kyozo and museum are open 09:00 to 16:00 all year. On 31 December everything closes at 13:00. No closed days are listed, and no booking is needed.
The morning service, O-Asaji, is held daily at sunrise in two parts, Tendai and then Jodo. During Juzu-chodai, priests touch kneeling visitors’ heads with prayer beads four times each morning, and anyone may receive it. The official page gives no clock time for sunrise service; a secondary guide puts it at about 07:00 in January. The temple answers on 026-234-3591 from 09:00 to 16:30.
Photo rules are not found. Zenkoji’s Tomyo lantern festival falls in February, and sources differ on the week, so the 2027 date is unclear right now.
Chusonji
Chusonji, in Hiraizumi, Iwate, is a UNESCO-listed temple known for the Konjikido, its gold hall. The standard ticket covers the Konjikido, Sankozo, Kyozo and Kyu-Odo: $6 (¥1,000) for adults, or $10 (¥1,600) with the special secret-image opening. The page carries no dated 2026-27 notice, so these fees are last known.
It is open 08:30 to 17:00 from 1 March to 3 November and 08:30 to 16:30 from 4 November to the end of February. It is open year-round with no closed days, and no booking is needed; the office line is 0191-46-2211. The winter hours begin on 4 November 2026. Photo rules for the Konjikido are not found.
Yamadera
Yamadera, officially Risshakuji, is a cliffside temple in Yamagata reached by 1,015 stone steps. Visitors from junior high school age pay $3 (¥500), and children aged 4 and over pay $1 (¥200). Payment is cash only. The fee comes after a revision on 1 April 2025, so the older $2 (¥300) figure in some guides is out of date.
Hours depend on the month:
- April to September: 08:00 to 16:00.
- October and November: 08:00 to 15:30.
- December to March: 08:30 to 15:00. The same page also gives 16:00 as the closing time.
The climb takes about 1 hour 30 minutes round trip, and ordinary clothes and shoes are fine. Yamadera stays open from December to March with shorter hours and may close earlier in bad weather. No closed days are listed, and no booking is needed. Drones are banned over the precincts and trails. Photo rules are not found.
Zuiganji
Zuiganji, in Matsushima, Miyagi, is a National Treasure Zen temple with a treasure museum and Zen practice. Adults pay $6 (¥1,000) and children $3 (¥500). Groups of 30 or more pay $6 (¥900) and $3 (¥400) each, and the disability rate is $3 (¥400) for adults and $1 (¥200) for children. Fees rose from $5 (¥700) for adults and $3 (¥400) for children on 1 April 2026. The notice of 1 August 2025 says the rise funds the treasure hall renovation.
It opens at 08:30 in every month. Closing time depends on the month, and the last entry is 30 minutes earlier:
- December and January: 15:30.
- February and November: 16:00.
- March and October: 16:30.
- April to September: 17:00.
A visit takes 30 to 40 minutes. No closed days are listed. There is no general reservation: only disability-facility groups apply, two weeks ahead by fax or mail on 022-354-2023. The page lists a Night Visit 2026 and moon-viewing events; their dates are not found.
How to combine them
Zenkoji is in Nagano and the other three are in Tohoku, so this is two trips, not one.
- Zenkoji from Nagano city: The Nagaden train takes 4 minutes for $1 (¥170), then a walk of 5 to 10 minutes. Arrive at sunrise for the service; the inner hall closes at 16:00 from December. The Jigokudani snow monkeys fit the same stay.
- Zuiganji and Chusonji from Sendai: The Tohoku guide’s three-day plan goes Tokyo to Sendai in 90 to 100 minutes, then Matsushima on day 2 and Hiraizumi on day 3. Secondary guides put Godaido at Matsushima as free, open 08:30 to 17:00, and a 50-minute cruise at $10 (¥1,500). The times and fares from Sendai to Matsushima and to Hiraizumi are not found. Give each temple its own day.
- Yamadera from Yamagata: Sendai to Yamagata on the Senzan Line takes 1 hour 21 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes, per secondary notes, and Yamagata also serves Zao snow monsters. The time from Yamagata to Yamadera is not found.
Before you go Carry cash and start Yamadera early. Closing is given as 15:00 from December to March, the round trip takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and the temple may close early in bad weather.
