Snow monkeys in winter: the 30-minute walk
Take the Nagano bus, buy an online ticket and walk 2 km (30 minutes) from Kanbayashi Onsen. Fees are higher from 1 Dec 2026, and the monkeys may skip the bath.
From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano (about 80 minutes), a Nagaden bus to the park stop (about 45 minutes), then walk the 2 km trail from Kanbayashi Onsen (about 30 minutes). Buy an online ticket first: sales began on 6 Aug 2026, and from December the park gives entry priority to online buyers. From 1 Dec 2026 the on-site adult fee is $6 (¥1,000), up from $5 (¥800). No page promises you a monkey in the water.
Best for: one winter wildlife day, or a night near Nagano, for people who are fine with a snow trail and no monkey guarantee.
Do you need to book online?
Strongly advised in winter. The park’s notice says walk-ups may wait and, on a crowded day, may not get in, and from December to April online buyers go first. Online ticketing started on 6 Aug 2026. Tickets are for a set date and go on sale 3 months ahead.
Guides written before August still say there are no advance tickets. They are out of date.
News reports in June 2026 said the park would cap daily numbers, with 2,000 a day mentioned and peak days of 3,000 to 4,000 visitors. No official page gives a cap figure, so treat 2,000 as a report, not a rule.
The park’s winter notice also carries a crowd calendar for December 2026 to March 2027, shaded “crowded” and “very crowded”. Read it on the park’s information page before you pick a date.
To verify A tour operator affiliated with Nagaden, the bus line that serves the park, says advance tickets are mandatory from December to March and on holidays. It also says you pick a time slot, need a card with 3-D Secure, can cancel up to 3 days ahead and get no refund if the monkeys stay away. That is the operator’s wording, not the park’s. Read the refund terms before you pay.
What does it cost?
The gate adult fee is $6 (¥1,000) from 1 December 2026, and the web ticket is $6 (¥880).
| Ticket | Adult | Child (elementary to high school) |
|---|---|---|
| Gate from December | $6 (¥1,000) | $3 (¥500) |
| Gate before December | $5 (¥800) | $3 (¥400) |
| Web ticket | $6 (¥880) | $3 (¥440) |
The gate prices rose on 1 Dec 2026; the earlier prices applied until 30 Nov 2026. Children under 6 are free with a guardian, per the December notice, which also lists the web prices. The web ticket undercuts the gate adult fee by $1 (¥120). At the gate, cards and e-money work and QR payments do not.
Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
How do you get there from Tokyo?
Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, then a bus, then the trail. A Japan Rail Pass covers the Shinkansen. Nagaden is a private bus line, so budget its fare separately.
| Leg | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo to Nagano | about 80 min on the Kagayaki (reserved seats only) | about $50 to $55 (¥7,680 to ¥8,500) |
| Nagano bus | about 45 min, Nagaden, Nagano Station to the park stop | $12 (¥1,800) |
| Trail | about 30 min on foot, Kanbayashi Onsen to the monkeys | free |
The bus fare and time come from one operator guide, because the park’s access page is ambiguous. Another guide shows $19 (¥3,000) with no basis given, so check the bus operator’s page.
A rough round trip from Tokyo comes to about $130 to $140 (¥19,800 to ¥21,500): two Shinkansen tickets, two bus rides at the same fare and the web entry ticket. That is arithmetic from listed fares, not a quote.
As a day trip it works on paper, at about 2 hours 35 minutes of moving time each way before connections. The park closes at 16:00 in winter and the bus timetable is not sourced here, so check the bus operator’s page before you commit.
What is the walk like in winter?
The Yumichi Natural Trail runs about 2 km from Kanbayashi Onsen to the park and takes about 30 minutes. Parts are unpaved and there are stairs, so wear boots with grip. The park sits at 850 m and is under snow for about a third of the year. It asks you to hold small children.
Winter hours are 9:00 to 16:00 (8:30 to 17:00 from April to October), and the park is open all year. It can close or shorten its day without notice for weather, monkey behaviour or disaster. It asks you to arrive 30 minutes before closing, so with a 30 minute walk, treat 15:00 at Kanbayashi as the latest sensible start.
By car, Kanbayashi has a free car park, and the park takes no liability for it. The lot nearer the monkeys costs $3 (¥500). Lots are closed to some vehicles on New Year and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from December to March, and the park says to use public transport. The Shibu logging road is closed in winter.
Rules the park states:
- No pets, and that includes assistance dogs.
- No bathing with the monkeys.
- No strollers or wheelchairs on the trail.
JNTO adds three more: do not feed, touch or threaten the monkeys, keep at least 1 m away, and do not stare, because the monkeys read it as aggression. Rules on drones and tripods are not published, so read the signs and follow staff instructions on arrival.
Will the monkeys show up?
Not always, and the park says so. It publishes a forecast and a live camera, so look before you walk 2 km. Winter is the season when the monkeys use the warm water, and the park describes autumn sightings as sporadic.
The park’s own forecast in October 2026 called all-day absence highly likely, and its running tally that month showed 12 absence days, about 70% of the days so far. That is an autumn figure; no winter absence rate is published, so there is no December to March number to quote.
Before you go Check the park’s forecast and live camera before you commit to the 2 km walk.
How does it fit with Nagano and Nozawa?
Jigokudani branches off Nagano city, the same hub as Zenkoji, Matsumoto, Hakuba and Nozawa. Nagano in winter has the base-and-route plans with minutes and yen. Nozawa Onsen has the village baths and the skiing, reached from Iiyama on the same Shinkansen line. No route or time between the park and Nozawa is sourced, so plan them as separate days.
| Day card | Jigokudani |
|---|---|
| Ride | Shinkansen to Nagano, then the bus: about 2 hours 5 minutes |
| Thrill | Monkeys in the bath, if they come |
| Soak | Not found: bath names, prices and tattoo rules near Kanbayashi and Shibu |
| Meal | Not found |
Tattoo rules vary by bath: see Can I go in an onsen with a tattoo? For rail passes, see Can I use a rail pass to Hakuba? More winter wildlife is in Wild and Trek.
Quick answers
Do I need an online ticket for Jigokudani?

How much is Jigokudani from December 2026?
On site, adults pay $6 (¥1,000) from 1 December 2026, up from $5 (¥800), and children pay $3 (¥500). Web tickets list at $6 (¥880) for adults and $3 (¥440) for children.

On paper, yes: about 2 hours 35 minutes of moving time each way (Shinkansen about 80 minutes, bus about 45, trail about 30). The park closes at 16:00 in winter and the bus timetable is not sourced, so check the bus operator's page first.
