Zao snow monsters: when to go in winter
Snow monsters peak late January to February, reached by a $28 (¥4,400) ropeway. Village baths cost $1 (¥200) each; the big outdoor bath is shut in winter.
The Zao snow monsters (juhyo) are best from late January through February, with early to mid-February the usual pick. A ropeway reaches them for $28 (¥4,400) round trip. The big outdoor bath, Dairotenburo, is closed from late November to April, but three village baths cost $1 (¥200) each. Lift tickets run about $52 to $58 (¥8,000 to ¥9,000) in regular and peak periods, per a database that cites the resort’s price page.
Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
When are the snow monsters at their best?
| Phase | When and what |
|---|---|
| Forming | Late December: monsters start to form |
| Peak | Late January to February; early to mid-February is the usual pick |
| Light-up | 26 Dec 2026 to 23 Feb 2027: evening light-up on 31 nights, 17:00 to 21:00, per two guides |
| Collapse | Early March |
The ropeway’s 2026-27 light-up calendar is not posted, so the 31 nights are a guide’s figure. Formation depends on cold and wind, and the 2026-27 outlook leans warm (see the Japow hub). Keep a spare day for a clear morning and read the ropeway status that day: summit wind can suspend it.
How does the ropeway work?
The Zao Ropeway’s winter guide lists adult fares of $28 (¥4,400) round trip and $14 (¥2,200) one way. Children pay $14 (¥2,200) round trip. The fare page carries no season date. Base-line hours are 8:30 to 17:00 and summit-line hours are 8:45 to 16:45. The last round trip up to the Jizo summit leaves at 16:00. Pets are refused in winter.
The light-up evenings carry a night fare of $30 (¥4,600), per two guides.
Which Zao baths are open in winter?
The three village communal baths are open; the big outdoor bath is not.
Closed in winter Zao Dairotenburo (also spelled Dairotemburo), the big outdoor bath, is closed from late November to April, according to its operator. The operator’s page lists adult admission at $5 (¥850) and children at $3 (¥400), open 9:30 to 17:00 on weekdays and to 18:00 on weekends and holidays. The 2026 season opened on 25 Apr; the 2027 opening date is not yet listed.
The three communal baths in the village are Shimoyu, Kawarayu and Kamiyu. Each costs $1 (¥200) for adults and half that for children, paid into an unmanned fee box. They open 6:00 to 22:00, and closed days are not listed on the Visit Yamagata page.
- Soap: banned. There is no shower, so wash with the tub provided.
- Lockers: none. Take off metal accessories. The water is strongly acidic and can tarnish silver.
- Heat: source temperatures are 53.3 C at Shimoyu, 42.4 C at Kawarayu and 54.0 C at Kamiyu. The water is not heated, well water is added, and no disinfectant is used. Kawarayu is the coolest.
One guide lists Shinzaemon no Yu, a paid bath, at $6 (¥1,000), 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Wednesdays. Its winter opening is unconfirmed. The Zao Onsen Tourist Association lists an information line, 023-694-9328.
Can you use the Zao baths with a tattoo?
Neither the Dairotenburo operator’s page nor the Visit Yamagata page for the communal baths publishes a tattoo rule, and that is not permission. Policy can differ by bath, so ask first. A private bath or a cover is the fallback. See Can I go in an onsen with a tattoo?
How do you get from Tokyo to Zao Onsen?
Take the Yamagata Shinkansen (Tsubasa) from Tokyo to Yamagata, about 2 h 22 to 2.5 h and $73 to $74 (¥11,250 to ¥11,500) one way, depending on the source. Then take the bus from Yamagata Station’s east exit: 35 to 45 minutes, $8 (¥1,200), about hourly, paid on board. In total that is $80 to $82 (¥12,450 to ¥12,700) one way.
One guide says the Japan Rail Pass and the JR East Pass cover the train. The bus is not covered. A last-bus time was not found, so confirm the schedule if you arrive late. From Sendai, a train to Yamagata takes about 1 h 15 and a direct bus about 85 minutes, according to a route database.
Who is Zao best for, and who should skip it?
Best for
- Snow monsters without a flight: one Shinkansen and one bus.
- A ski day followed by an acidic-water soak in the same village.
- Ikon holders: Zao gives 7 days on the full pass and 5 on Base.
Not for
- Fixed dates: monster timing varies by winter.
- The Dairotenburo in winter: it is shut.
- Washing inside the communal baths: soap is banned there.
- Confirmed lift prices: the 2026-27 figures come from a database.
- Anyone who needs English-language support: no source describes it at Zao.
A database lists about 30 lifts and 881 m of vertical, while 32 is the most common lift count in other sources. Treat both as approximate.
Safety No gate or backcountry rules were found for Zao, and the off-piste answer linked below covers Niseko and Hakuba Valley only. Ask the resort before you leave the groomed runs.
What does a Zao ski day cost?
Adult one-day lift tickets for 2026-27, from a price database that cites the resort’s page; the page itself is unconfirmed and a seller’s page agrees. For comparison, 2024-25 listed $48 (¥7,500) at peak and $31 (¥4,800) in low season, and no 2025-26 price was found.
| Period | Adult, one day |
|---|---|
| Regular | $52 (¥8,000) |
| Peak | $58 (¥9,000) |
| Spring | $45 (¥7,000) |
| Opening and final | $31 (¥4,800) |
One guide lists peak as 26 Dec to 3 Jan and 30 Jan to 28 Feb, and spring as 15 to 31 Mar. The best snow-monster weeks fall inside the peak-price window. Multi-day tickets barely help: a regular 2-day ticket is listed at $105 (¥15,900), only $1 (¥100) under two day tickets.
Night skiing on the Uwanodai slope runs 17:00 to 21:00 for $19 (¥3,000), on selected dates from 19 Dec to 28 Feb plus 6 and 7 Mar, according to a guide and a database. Season dates are not stated on an official page. One guide gives a planned opening of 12 Dec, and a reseller shows tickets valid from 19 Dec 2026 to 31 Mar 2027.
No 2026-27 Ikon price is available, so no break-even is given; Ikon pays off if you already hold it.
Ride & Soak card: one day in Zao
