When does Kamikochi close?
Kamikochi closes in mid-November. The Kamikochi Tourist Association holds its 2026 closing ceremony on 15 November, and its FAQ counts winter from 16 November, so plan to be out by 15 November.
Lodges stop taking guests in stages. The last overnight stay is 31 October at Myojinkan, 3 November at four lodges including Konashi and Yokoo Sanso, and 4 November at Kamonjigoya and Tokusawa Lodge. Taishoike Hotel takes its last guests on 13 November, and eight lodges, including Imperial, Alpen and Shirakabaso, on 14 November. Sakamaki and Nakanoyu stay open all year, though closures are possible. The Yakedake trail on the Kamikochi side closed for winter on 14 October 2026.
From 16 November to mid-April most facilities are closed and no public transport runs beyond the Kama Tunnel. Entry is allowed, but winter climbing is at your own risk and an entry notice is required. Bus fares were not found.
Do you need to file a climbing plan?
In Nagano, yes, on designated trails including Yari and Karamatsu. The plan has been mandatory since 1 July 2016, under article 21 of the prefecture’s mountain safety ordinance, which sets no penalty.
File on Compass, in the trailhead postbox, by mail or by fax. The page gives no deadline. Nagano says Compass is Japanese only, while one Compass page shows an English option.
Other prefectures set their own rules:
- Toyama. In the Tsurugi area the ordinance period runs from 1 December to 15 May. File 20 days ahead and carry the receipt. From 1 December to 15 April you may be asked to cancel or change a plan in dangerous zones, and solo climbers are asked to cancel. Toyama Police says a hiking app’s plan sharing does not replace the filing.
- Toyama fine. A search summary gives a maximum of $325 (¥50,000), and some sources give $195 (¥30,000). Toyama reports using no penalty in 20 years.
- Gifu. A notice, as summarised in search results, covers the Northern Alps, Yakedake, Ontake, Hakusan and Norikura, with a fine reported up to $325 (¥50,000).
Nagano advises matching the route to your fitness, wearing proper clothing, starting early and being back by early afternoon, checking the forecast and turning back when it says so, and carrying mountain insurance that covers rescue.
Safety File your plan, start early and turn back on a bad forecast. Carry insurance that covers rescue before any Alps route.
When is the Alps climbing season?
The main season runs from July to early October, per a secondary guide, with the peak from late July to 15 August and the rainy season from mid-June to late July. The same guide treats April to May and mid-September to early November as non-standard windows, with snow likely higher up.
What is known about winter conditions?
Nagano’s spring-snow notice of April 2026 warns of avalanches and slips, and Hokkaido Prefecture’s warning tells climbers to avoid avalanche terrain and check forecasts. The Hokkaido Police climbing safety page, regional mountain-accident councils and Nagano’s police mountain information exist.
Winter hut status for the Alps, Tateyama and Daisetsuzan was not found. The scope of JMA avalanche advisories is unconfirmed, and no official Hokkaido avalanche bulletin was found.
