How much does a trip to Japan cost?

A 2025 Japan Tourism Agency survey averages about $1,480 (¥229,000) per visitor per trip. Build your own total from hotel tax, pass, card and meal prices.

The average visitor spent about $1,480 (¥229,000) per trip in 2025, over 9.5 nights, per the Japan Tourism Agency’s Inbound Consumption Trend Survey. That is a survey average, not a budget, so this guide sets it beside the confirmed prices for rail, cards, data, meals and hotel tax and leaves the total to you.

Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.

On a room at $130 (¥20,000) per person per night, these bands give $6 (¥1,000) in Kyoto, $3 (¥500) in Osaka, $1 (¥200) in Tokyo today, $4 (¥600) in Tokyo from 1 Apr 2027 and $3 (¥400) in Okinawa from 1 Feb 2027.

Before you book Add the hotel tax per person per night for every stay on your route. It is worked out on the room-only price, so meals do not change it.

How do you build your own total?

Work line by line, and keep unclear prices out of the sum. Seven steps cover it:

  1. Fix the nights and the cities.
  2. Take a room rate for each stay from your own booking page.
  3. Add the hotel tax per person per night from the table above.
  4. Price the rail legs as single tickets, then test a pass against the total.
  5. Add an IC card balance, a subway ticket and mobile data.
  6. Add meals for the days you eat out.
  7. Get an insurance quote and check the day’s exchange rate.

Label any line that uses a last known price, such as the 2025 data plans, as last year’s figure.

What is missing from the official cost data?

The agency pages give no average room rate, no accommodation share of visitor spending, no per-day spending and no travel insurance premium. Take a room rate from your own booking page and add the tax above. Flight prices are outside this guide.

To verify The $1,480 (¥229,000) and food figures come from agency survey documents whose definitions differ between tables. Tokyo’s 3% and Okinawa’s 2% are not yet in force, so use today’s Tokyo rates for trips before 1 Apr 2027.
