Akihabara for first-timers: what to do in 3 hours, what to skip
Start at noon, carry 100-yen coins, ignore street touts, and pay full price for tax-free goods: the refund comes at the airport since 1 Nov 2026.
Give Akihabara three hours and start at noon, when Mandarake opens and every other stop on the route below is already open. Carry 100-yen coins for the gachapon, ignore anyone who steers you to a cafe from the street, and read the tax-free section before you buy: from 1 Nov 2026 the saving no longer comes off at the till.
This page sits in Anime and manga. Other Tokyo districts and regions are in Destinations. Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
What is the 3-hour route?
Mandarake is the latest opener on the list (12:00), so noon is the earliest start that works for every stop with a listed time. The order below follows opening hours, not distance, so drop the stops into your map app and reorder them by proximity, but keep Mandarake after noon.
| Order | Stop | Open | Time | What for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mandarake Complex | 12:00 to 20:00 daily | 45 min | Second-hand anime and manga goods. The listing says the buyback counter takes items until 19:30. |
| 2 | Gachapon Kaikan | Last known: 11:00 to 20:00 weekdays, 11:00 to 19:00 Sundays and holidays | 20 min | About 500 capsule machines. Bring coins. Current hours are unclear right now. |
| 3 | Super Potato | 11:00 to 20:00 | 30 min | Retro games. |
| 4 | An electronics store: Yodobashi or Akky | Yodobashi 9:30 to 22:00, Akky 9:30 to 20:00 | 30 min | Tax-free electronics. Akky specialises in tax-free. |
| 5 | Don Quijote | 24 hours | Optional | Open after everything else shuts. |
That is about 125 minutes of browsing plus walking. The same guide lists Radio Kaikan 10:00 to 20:00, Sofmap 11:00 to 20:00, Laox 9:30 to 19:30 and Gamers 10:00 to 22:00 (weekends to 21:00). The page has no date, so check the door.
On Sundays Chuo Dori, the main street, is closed to cars from 13:00 to 18:00, or to 17:00 from October to March. A noon start puts part of that window inside your route. On those days street selling, performances and cycling are banned.
What should a first-timer skip?
Skip street invitations, hidden cafe charges, Japan-only electronics, a detour to the Tokyo Anime Center and old tax-free habits.
| Skip | Why |
|---|---|
| Street invitations | Rip-off cafes have billed visitors hundreds of dollars, per press reports, and the touting ban has little force. |
| Hidden charges | Any cafe that will not show its entry charge is a skip. Charges vary by cafe, and staying past the time limit costs extra. |
| Japan-only electronics | Some are built for Japan only, voltage included. Ask whether a model works in your country before you pay. |
| Tokyo Anime Center | Its official site places it in Shibuya (DNP Plaza, inside Shibuya MODI), not at its old Akihabara UDX site. |
| Old tax-free habits | The discount at the till ended on 31 Oct 2026. See the tax-free section below. |
How much do maid cafes charge?
A maid cafe charges an entry fee per person, then you pay for what you order. Maidreamin publishes its own charges; two visitor guides give ranges for other cafes.
| Item | Typical charge |
|---|---|
| Maidreamin entry | $6 (¥880) per adult per hour, extra hours at the same rate |
| Maidreamin average spend | $11 to $32 (¥1,650 to ¥5,000) per person |
| Other cafes, entry | $3 to $5 (¥500 to ¥800) per person, covering 60 to 90 minutes |
| @Home Cafe entry | $4 (¥600), one guide |
| Drinks | $3 to $6 (¥500 to ¥900) |
| Mains | $5 to $10 (¥800 to ¥1,500) |
| Desserts | $6 to $10 (¥900 to ¥1,500) |
| Maid Polaroid | $3 to $6 (¥500 to ¥1,000) |
| Photo and show | $5 to $32 (¥700 to ¥5,000) |
At the guides’ range, an entry charge plus one drink comes to about $6 to $11 (¥1,000 to ¥1,700) before add-ons. Maidreamin shops are fully non-smoking, and you may leave when you like.
House rules, per the same guides:
- Do not photograph maids unless you buy a photo. At Maidreamin, photos and video are allowed only when no maid, kitchen cast member or other guest is in the frame. Some venues ban interior photos. Food photos are usually fine.
- No touching, no asking staff for contact details, no waiting for them after their shift.
- @Home Cafe has some English-speaking staff, according to one guide.
How do you avoid touts and rip-off cafes?
Do not follow street touts, and read the price list before you sit. Chiyoda Ward’s ban on touting took effect on 1 April, by reports from around 2014. It carries no criminal penalty and press reports call its effect weak. Whether it is enforced today as written is not confirmed.
Rip-off cafes have billed visitors hundreds of dollars, and police arrests have been reported. In 2022 the Akihabara Concept Shop Union started a certification scheme for member shops. The reports do not say how to spot a certified one.
Safety Walk away from any cafe that will not show its price list and table charge before you sit.
What changes for tax-free shopping after 1 November 2026?
Since 1 Nov 2026 you pay the full price including 10% tax, and the tax comes back at departure. Shops took the tax off at the till until 31 Oct 2026. Figures, manga and other goods follow the same rules as everything else.
- Pay the price including 10% tax and show your passport.
- Set up a refund method, such as a card.
- Before you check bags, scan your passport at a tax-free terminal in the departure lobby. Keep the goods in your carry-on until it is done.
- A Green result finishes the procedure. On Red, take the goods to the customs inspection area.
- The shop or its refund operator refunds you afterwards.
Rules that matter for a haul of figures and gadgets:
- Customs checks per receipt. If one item on a receipt is missing, none of that receipt’s goods qualify.
- You must leave Japan within 90 days of the purchase date.
- Anything used or consumed in Japan gets no refund.
- Visit Japan Web can replace the terminal step at seven airports: Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, New Chitose, Fukuoka and Naha.
- On a domestic flight followed by an international one, do the procedure at the final departure airport, per JNTO.
- Spend $32 (¥5,000) or more before tax at one store in one day, per Japan Customs.
- Most electronics stores offer tax-free, and Akky specialises in it.
- Used goods are generally eligible under national rules, but each shop needs its own tax-free licence. Ask at the counter before you pay. Mandarake Complex runs a tax-free counter that, per a hotel guide, closes around 19:00, earlier than the 20:00 shop closing.
The full flow is in Japan tax-free shopping from 1 November 2026, and the other 2026 changes are in What changed in 2026.
To verify Refund fee and refund time. No official page states either, so ask the shop before you pay.
How do gachapon and claw machines work?
- Most gachapon machines take only 100-yen coins, some take 200, 300 or 500, and none give change. Carry a stack.
- Some machines take IC cards. Check for the icon.
- If a capsule jams, do not force the machine. Ask staff.
- Do not shake a claw machine. Some venues rotate players, and staff will help with placement if you ask.
- Gachapon Kaikan has about 500 machines. Capsules mostly cost $2 to $3 (¥300 to ¥500), and premium ones $5 (¥800).
What comes after Akihabara?
By most guides’ counts, Nakano Broadway puts about 33 Mandarake shops in one building, on four floors. See Nakano Broadway and Mandarake: which shop on which floor for the floor-by-floor table.
